The Co-op food division chief highlights the substantial impact of shoplifting on staff, overshadowing financial losses.
- Shoplifting has led to an estimated £39 million in losses for the Co-op in the first half of the year, marking a 19% increase from the previous year.
- Despite investing millions in security measures, shoplifting incidents have become more frequent and audacious, according to Co-op’s food boss.
- The increase in shoplifting is not deterring potential employees from joining Co-op, as claimed by the managing director.
- Co-op has encountered unprecedented levels of crime and abuse, with a significant rise in violent incidents in its stores.
Shoplifting has emerged as a significant concern for the Co-op, as articulated by Matt Hood, the managing director of its food division. While the financial losses are notable, reaching £39 million in just half a year, Hood emphasises that the real cost is the impact on the physical and mental well-being of store employees who confront this challenge daily.
Hood expressed concern over the increasing brazenness of shoplifters, despite substantial investments aimed at deterring such activities. The company has allocated £27 million annually towards security and guarding, alongside over £5 million on enhanced kiosks and £3 million on advanced CCTV and AI technologies to strengthen store safety.
Hood insists that despite these challenges, Co-op’s appeal as a workplace has not waned. “We are not actively seeing that it’s a challenge in terms of recruiting for people to work in our stores or wanting to be part of Co-op,” he stated, indicating steady interest from potential employees.
The situation is further complicated by recent reports indicating a surge in shoplifting and related violence. Paul Gerrard, Co-op’s director of public affairs and board secretariat, presented alarming statistics to the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee, revealing a 44% rise in crime within Co-op stores. Among these, incidents of violence and abuse have escalated by 35%.
As the Co-op grapples with these unprecedented challenges, it continues to explore effective strategies to safeguard its staff and maintain a secure shopping environment.
Shoplifting remains a profound challenge for Co-op, demanding continuous attention and innovative solutions to protect staff and customers.
