Mohsin Issa, the co-owner of Asda, has confirmed his decision to step back from his executive leadership role at the supermarket chain. His focus will now primarily be on his role as the sole CEO of EG Group, a position he had previously announced. This shift marks a significant transition in Asda’s leadership dynamics.
Lord Rose, currently serving as Chair, and Rob Hattrell, a TDR partner and former European head of eBay, will assume leadership responsibilities at Asda. Rob Hattrell also brings experience as a former executive at Tesco. Issa will continue to hold a position as a non-executive director on the Asda board, maintaining his influence within the company.
Under Issa’s tenure, Asda has made notable strides in expanding its market presence. He was instrumental in launching Asda into the convenience store segment and implementing a widely adopted loyalty application, now utilised by over six million customers. Additionally, Issa played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for a robust IT infrastructure, setting the stage for long-term strategic growth.
Lord Rose expressed gratitude for Issa’s contributions, stating, “We respect Mohsin’s decision to move on from his role at Asda where his work is complete to be the sole CEO of EG Group.” He further commented on Issa’s lasting impact, highlighting the foundation Issa established to bolster Asda’s technological and operational capabilities.
Issa himself stated, “I am very proud of the highly experienced team we have built, and the significant progress made to build a bigger and better Asda over the last three years, as well as our unwavering commitment to provide customers with uncompromising value.” His decision to step back comes as Asda continues its search for a new CEO to guide the company through its forthcoming strategic phase.
Asda is poised to enter a new era with leadership shifts as it seeks a new CEO to navigate future strategies.
