Lidl has announced a significant expansion of its plant-based product range, introducing 28 new items, to cater to the growing appetite for sustainable food options. This decision comes as a response to a notable 12% increase in consumer demand for plant-based alternatives over the past year.
Lidl’s expansion is set to transform its plant-based offerings, more than tripling the current range available to consumers. The newly launched Vemondo! Plant Based range will begin appearing in stores from this month, with a national rollout planned for January. This expansion highlights Lidl’s commitment to making sustainable food choices more accessible by offering competitive pricing on plant-based products.
Furthermore, Lidl has set itself apart as the first UK retailer to establish specific and ambitious sales targets for plant-based products, underscoring its role in supporting the shift toward more sustainable diets. This strategic move not only reflects changing consumer preferences but also aligns with broader environmental goals.
Richard Bourns, Lidl’s chief commercial officer, emphasised the retailer’s investment in British farming as a key component of this initiative. “We’re becoming the first UK retailer to set specific plant-based protein targets, with a commitment to breaking down key barriers that currently exist, ensuring that more customers can afford to make healthy and sustainable choices,” said Bourns.
The Vemondo! range will offer an array of plant-based products, including burgers, sausages, mince, and nuggets, catering to diverse consumer tastes. Lidl’s approach aims to provide these alternatives at market-leading prices, thus appealing to cost-conscious consumers who are increasingly considering the environmental impact of their food choices.
Lidl’s expansion of its plant-based range is a forward-thinking response to evolving consumer demands and environmental considerations. By introducing an extensive selection of affordable plant-based products, Lidl is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable retail practices.
