Lidl has set a new precedent in retail education by launching its inaugural Retail Leadership degree apprenticeship scheme in cooperation with Kingston University. This innovative four-year programme is designed to offer a combination of academic study and practical in-store experience.
Out of over 5,000 applicants, 51 promising school leavers have been chosen. Upon joining, they will earn a starting salary of approximately £26,000, which can increase to £46,000 by the time they complete the programme. This offers a significant financial incentive for those chosen to embark on this educational journey.
The apprentices will gain hands-on experience in-store and will regularly attend sessions at Kingston University as well as Lidl House, the company’s headquarters. This structured approach aims to deepen their understanding of the retail sector.
The scheme also marks Lidl’s 30th year of operation in Great Britain, highlighting its commitment to developing future retail leaders. Stephanie Rogers, Lidl GB’s chief human resources officer, noted the excitement of welcoming over 100 new recruits through this and other programmes. She emphasised the importance of investing in the future generation of retail professionals.
Kingston University’s head of Kingston Business School, Professor Sanka Sivarajah, commented on the need for skills development across industries. He stated that the apprenticeship will equip students with essential competencies such as digital marketing insights and financial skills, preparing them to be versatile managers.
The initiative reflects a commitment to nurturing the next generation of retail professionals through education and practical experience.
