Mohsin Issa has officially stepped back from his executive leadership role at Asda. His decision marks a shift in focus towards his position as sole CEO of EG Group, a role previously announced. In his absence, Asda chairman Stuart Rose, along with TDR Capital partner Rob Hattrell, will assume Issa’s executive responsibilities. Hattrell brings a wealth of experience from his previous tenure at eBay Europe and Tesco.
Issa’s departure from the day-to-day management of Asda does not signify a complete exit. He retains his influence as co-owner and will continue contributing as a non-executive director on the board. Stuart Rose stated, “We respect Mohsin’s decision to move on from his role at Asda… We are very grateful for the role he has played, including launching into the growth market of convenience stores and introducing a loyalty app now used by more than six million customers.”
Issa himself commented on the strategic progress achieved during his tenure, expressing pride in the experienced team built and the advancements made in enhancing Asda’s offerings. “Given these achievements and the significant strategic steps we have taken, I have decided now is the right time for me to step back,” he said. He affirmed his enthusiasm to concentrate on EG Group while remaining a supportive shareholder for Asda’s leadership.
The transition comes amidst Asda’s ongoing search for a new CEO to steer the business into its next phase. Lord Rose highlighted the need for a “full-time, fully experienced retail executive” to lead further developments. The supermarket aims to align its strategic objectives with consumer needs while bolstering its market position. Rose’s comments underline the urgency and importance of this appointment, signalling a continued evolution of leadership to address operational challenges.
Mohsin Issa’s strategic exit from Asda leadership sets the stage for future organisational growth and innovation.
