Morrisons has commenced a significant investment exceeding £7 million in its Channel Island convenience stores following the acquisition of 36 stores from SandpiperCI.
Currently, Morrisons operates 19 Daily stores, with the remainder under brands such as Iceland, Chequers Express, and Le Cocq. In the forthcoming months, this landscape is set to transform as all the stores, except for two Le Cocq sites, receive the Morrisons format. This rebranding effort represents a major shift, with funds directed towards the overall conversion programme and fabric enhancement of the stores.
Additionally, as part of a strategic revamp, Morrisons plans to introduce its More loyalty card to shoppers in the Channel Islands. This move intends to nurture customer engagement and loyalty, providing more value-added services to the community.
Rami Baitiéh, the chief executive of Morrisons, expressed enthusiasm stating, ‘I am delighted that now the transaction has completed, we can welcome 520 new colleagues into the Morrisons family. It’s a great business with great colleagues, and we are all looking forward to the exciting next chapter.’
Joseph Sutton, Director of convenience, online, and wholesale at Morrisons, remarked, ‘New ownership provides an opportunity for a reset and a step forward in the offer we can provide for our customers. So we are listening carefully to our customers to find out exactly what they would like to see in the stores.’ Sutton also highlighted plans to expand product ranges, including fresh food and additional categories such as clothing and homeware.
Meanwhile, Iceland has disclosed a new franchise partnership with independent retailer Alliance, scheduled to unveil new stores across Jersey and Guernsey over the coming year. This development follows the conclusion of its partnership with SandpiperCI, subsequent to the acquisition by Morrisons.
Morrisons’ ambitious rebranding and investment programme in the Channel Islands marks a pivotal step in reinforcing its presence and enhancing the shopping experience for local communities.
