M&S is making substantial strides in its sustainability efforts by expanding its Beauty Takeback Scheme to a total of 100 stores across the UK. With a focus on increasing accessibility, the high street giant has added the programme to 60 new locations, including key areas such as Birmingham Bullring, Cardiff, and Inverness.
Launched in June 2023 as a part of M&S’s Plan A roadmap to achieve Net Zero, this scheme offers customers a practical solution for recycling beauty packaging. From bottles and tubes to caps, pumps, and tubs, customers can now dispose of any plastic or aluminium beauty materials from any retailer using the boxes situated within the store’s beauty sections.
Since its inception last year, the initiative has made a notable impact by processing over 1.6 tonnes of beauty packaging. This effort significantly reduces the amount of waste that might have otherwise ended up in landfill, supporting a cleaner environment.
Katharine Beacham, M&S’s head of sustainability for clothing and home, highlighted the programme’s success, stating, “At M&S, we want to play our part in driving a more circular economy and the circularity services we offer are key to this. Since launching last year, our Beauty Takeback Scheme has proven hugely popular, providing a convenient option for customers to recycle their beauty products.”
By extending this scheme to more stores, M&S aims to empower more customers to contribute to sustainability efforts, allowing empty beauty packaging to be reused rather than discarded. This initiative is a key part of M&S’s commitment to reducing environmental impact and enhancing the circular economy.
M&S’s expansion of the Beauty Takeback Scheme marks a significant step in promoting sustainable practices across the UK.
