Six fresh suppliers are set to feature on Co-op’s shelves this month, marking the latest chapter in the Apiary mentoring and support programme.
Co-op’s Apiary incubator programme has announced the arrival of six new suppliers, expanding its list of vendors with unique and diverse offerings. These brands are poised to be available in over 100 Co-op stores, offering consumers innovative choices in food and drink. This initiative is part of Co-op’s latest wave of integration, focusing on businesses with a strong sense of purpose and a distinctive market approach.
The Apiary programme emphasises the development of suppliers who are committed to diversity and inclusion. Businesses selected for this scheme gain access to tailored mentoring and insightful advice, covering all aspects of the product development journey. As part of a broader supplier community, these producers can engage in networking and collective growth, enhancing their understanding and expertise in the market.
Among the new participants are Cháps, known for bringing African-inspired beverages to a wider audience; Cheeky Nibble, which focuses on premium snacks and cereals; and Eleat Cereal, offering health-conscious, high-protein alternatives. Other new additions include Loro Crisps, which prides itself on producing vegan and gluten-free plantain crisps, and Family Secret Proppadoms, a healthier snacking choice compared to traditional poppadoms. Notably, Some Grub becomes the first pet care brand to join the Apiary, offering innovative dog treats.
Rebecca Oliver, Co-op’s head of commercial for drinks, frozen, and community buying, remarked on the excitement surrounding the arrival of these brands in stores. According to Oliver, the programme helps meet consumer demand for quality and innovation that simplifies lives, meets on-the-go needs, or adds a touch of indulgence. She expressed confidence that these products would resonate with consumers, offering something unique that appeals to shopper communities.
In September, Co-op further expanded its support with a brand accelerator initiative, complementing the Apiary scheme. This programme is open to both new and existing suppliers and aims to enhance brand development. Participants gain from masterclasses, mentorship networking, and the ‘Gift to Give’ programme, which encourages larger suppliers to support smaller ones.
The introduction of these suppliers underscores Co-op’s ongoing commitment to innovation and supporting emerging businesses. By fostering diversity and inclusion, Co-op continues to set a precedent in the retail sector for engaging with forward-thinking suppliers.
