Primark has opened its inaugural small format store in Montijo, Portugal, marking a strategic shift in its retail approach. This pilot store, at 27,000 sq ft, is considerably smaller than the usual size for Primark, reflecting the company’s adaptability in targeting different market needs. Montijo’s demographic profile, with around 55,000 residents, supports this downsized approach contrasted with larger cities like Lisbon.
The store’s design prioritises visibility and shopper accessibility, with almost all areas visible upon entry, achieved by lowering mid-store walls to open up sightlines. This layout, despite the store’s modest size, mirrors the experience of larger Primark outlets. The store serves as an anchor in the Alegro Shopping Centre, catching eyes with its fluting-clad exterior and interior designed for optimal product display.
While the store offers a comprehensive range of fashion for women, men, and children, the homewares section is limited, described as “fashion for the home”. This curated selection aligns with Primark’s director of space optimisation, Mark Jordan’s vision of optimised space usage. The beauty section introduces a new concept, drawing inspiration from renowned US beauty brands.
In addressing back-of-house efficiency, the Montijo store features a stockroom 40% smaller than that of a typical store. This move is part of a broader strategy to streamline operations, balancing front-of-house appeal with effective inventory management. Sustainability is emphasised through the use of recycled materials like “Ecoboard” and “Smart Plastic” for store fittings, alongside aluminium structures and recycled clothing collection bins.
Looking ahead, Primark plans to extend this smaller format strategy, with a second store slated for opening in Bolton. This initiative reflects a growing trend among retailers to establish compact stores, providing convenience and accessibility to consumers unwilling to travel long distances. The Montijo store is a pioneering model, positioned to influence future retail developments across various markets.
The Montijo store exemplifies Primark’s innovative retail approach, potentially reshaping shopping experiences in smaller towns and cities.
