- The initiative aims to expand based on customer feedback after initial implementation.
- Part of a broader strategy, Aldi is committed to reducing carbon footprint and promoting sustainability.
Aldi has entered into a significant partnership with Shell to introduce rapid Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers at select locations. This initiative reflects Aldi’s commitment to sustainability, offering customers the opportunity to charge their vehicles while shopping at the supermarket.
The trial will see the installation of four 50kW rapid chargers in areas such as Hinckley, Cambuslang, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Paignton, Ulverston, Welshpool, Deal, and New Malden. These locations have been strategically chosen to assess demand and the impact of such services on customer shopping behaviour.
Customers can conveniently locate, check availability, and estimate charging costs via the Shell Recharge app. This app-based access reflects a user-friendly approach, allowing payments through the app or contactless card without requiring a subscription, thus providing flexibility for all users.
Aldi’s real estate director, George Brown, remarked that the supermarket chain is pleased to be partnering with Shell for this trial. He emphasized their commitment to environmental responsibility and the provision of sustainable options for customers. Bernie Williamson, General Manager of Shell Mobility UK, highlighted the ambition for most drivers in the UK to be within 10 minutes of a Shell rapid charger by 2030, enhancing the accessibility and convenience for EV owners.
This collaboration indicates a proactive step towards a more sustainable future, aligning with Aldi’s earlier commitments to reducing its carbon footprint through various energy-saving measures. These include integrating chiller doors, air source heat pumps, and more efficient refrigeration and lighting systems.
This trial marks a concerted effort by Aldi and Shell to support sustainable transportation solutions across the UK.
