In a recent survey conducted by the Retail Trust, nearly half of retail workers have expressed fears for their safety, highlighting a troubling rise in violent and abusive incidents within the retail sector. These findings underscore an urgent need for change as they expose the dire working conditions faced by retail staff.
The survey, involving 1,200 retail employees, revealed that 47% fear for their personal safety at work. Alarmingly, 39% are contemplating leaving their roles or the industry due to the increasing prevalence of aggressive behaviour from shoppers.
The data uncovers a disturbing frequency of abuse: one in three employees report encountering abuse weekly. A staggering 80% of shop workers and 90% of store managers have experienced abusive incidents while on duty. Verbal abuse affects almost all (98%) of these workers, with 33% facing threats of violence, 14% suffering physical assaults, and 10% being spat on.
The research highlights that support from employers is lacking, with 48% of respondents feeling inadequately supported in managing violence, threats, and abuse. Among those who feel unsupported, the intent to leave the industry rises to 56%, and 73% report heightened feelings of unsafety at work.
According to the Retail Trust’s findings, workplace conditions have deteriorated, with 55% of workers noting an increase in incidents over the past two years. Currently, 63% of employees experience stress and anxiety about going to work. The survey indicates that 64% of abusive episodes occur when confronting shoplifters, and 57% of workers have witnessed theft or damage to products.
In response to these alarming statistics, the Retail Trust is launching free skills training sessions in November to equip staff for handling challenging situations during the peak festive season. Supported by major retailers, this initiative is part of a larger campaign to enforce a zero-tolerance stance on abuse in retail environments.
The survey’s revelations paint a stark picture of life for UK’s retail workers, with increasing violence and abuse demanding immediate and effective preventative measures. The Retail Trust’s proactive steps are crucial in protecting workers and fostering a safer retail environment.
