The picturesque landscape of Yorkshire will once again host the ‘100 miles in one day ride’, a signature fundraising event for Marie Curie. This cycling challenge, now in its eighth year, will commence from the Ilkley Rugby Club on 28 June.
Philip Paget, a partner at Gordons LLP and the event organiser, highlighted the growth of cycling in the region since the Tour de Yorkshire in 2014. He noted that the allure of Yorkshire’s scenic routes, combined with an increased interest in cycling, has significantly contributed to the event’s popularity among local professionals and business owners. Paget commented, “Ever since the Tour de Yorkshire in 2014, cycling has grown immensely as an amateur sport. With our region’s breathtaking scenery, many are drawn to cycling in the warmer months. We aimed to harness this enthusiasm among local professionals and business owners, uniting them to celebrate their passion for cycling while supporting a noble cause.”
The successful organisation of the Wharfedale Ton greatly depends on the support of local businesses. Sponsors such as Gordons LLP, Handelsbanken, RSM, and others, embody the community spirit by backing this charitable initiative.
The event’s impact is evident as more than 230 participants managed to raise £12,650 for the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford last year, reflecting the dedication and generosity of the Yorkshire community. Paget expressed immense pride and gratitude towards the participants and donors: “I am immensely proud of all those who join us, not only for their dedication during the ride but also for their generous contributions. The services provided by the Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice in Bradford are invaluable, and we are delighted to offer our support.”
The Wharfedale Ton serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of cyclists and local businesses, showcasing the power of community engagement in supporting vital healthcare services.
The upcoming cycling event in Yorkshire exemplifies community dedication and passion for a cause, through sport and philanthropy.
