Fletchers Group has once again joined forces with the University of Liverpool to embark on a groundbreaking legal AI development project. This partnership aims to build on the success of their previous collaboration involving SIDSS (Structured Information Decision Support Systems), which has been instrumental in conserving ‘tens of thousands of hours’ in staff time for the company. SIDSS is primarily utilised to evaluate the feasibility of pursuing clinical negligence cases.
In strengthening this partnership, Fletchers is sponsoring two PhD students at the University of Liverpool, supporting their academic pursuits while they contribute to this innovative project. This educational investment underlines the company’s dedication to advancing research in the application of AI in law.
Leading the development of this initiative is Noah Milton, newly appointed as the AI Project Director. His role is crucial in integrating the latest AI technologies, such as Large Language Models (LLMs), to streamline operations and enhance the service provided to clients.
To further bolster the project team, Quentin Debard has been brought on as the head of data science. This strategic inclusion reinforces Fletchers’ ambition to be a leader in legal AI.
The collaboration, set to commence in November 2023, is funded by Fletchers as part of a multi-million-pound project spanning four years. Professor Katie Atkinson, representing the university, expressed enthusiasm about continuing this synergistic partnership that promises to break new ground in industrial AI research.
Fletchers Group CEO Peter Haden highlights the transformative potential of AI in extending legal services to a wider audience, particularly in cases where access to justice may be constrained by recent reforms and budget limitations. This project not only aims to innovate but also to broaden the horizons of justice accessibility.
The renewed partnership between Fletchers Group and the University of Liverpool is set to redefine AI’s role in the legal industry.
