Gary Lumby, formerly the UK director of small business banking at Yorkshire and Clydesdale Banks and a past president of the Leeds Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed as the CEO of Roche Legal, a private client law firm based in Yorkshire. Lumby’s new role promises to leverage his extensive business acumen to build on the successes that Rachel Roche has achieved, particularly focusing on expanding the firm’s cross-border probate work in the USA.
In maintaining his current engagement, Lumby continues as a portfolio non-executive director with various clients across the UK. Expressing enthusiasm for his new position, Lumby stated, “I am genuinely excited about working with Rachel and her team and accelerating the growth they have already seen to become the very best private client law firm in the UK.” He commended Rachel Roche for her arduous efforts in establishing her brand, noting its recognition by the Law Society through an invitation to co-author a book on founding a law firm.
Lumby, an advocate for growth-oriented enterprises ready to embrace risk and investment, sees Roche Legal’s internationalisation as unique for a Yorkshire-based private client law firm. Rachel Roche’s strategic efforts to establish connections in the USA have opened new opportunities for the firm to collaborate with UK law organisations lacking such expertise. The firm’s commitment to technological advancements further strengthens its competitive edge in the legal sector.
For over a decade, Lumby has served as a growth expert on the Goldman Sachs 10K Small Business Programme, where he previously mentored Rachel Roche at the Oxford Saïd Business School. Lumby highlighted the uniqueness of Roche’s international aspirations, her technological insight, and her well-crafted personal brand as key differentiators with significant potential for growth, “There is an opportunity for expansion with this international expertise to enable Roche Legal to become the No1 choice outside London.”
Rachel Roche, also co-chair of the London chapter of the New York State Bar Association, expressed her excitement about Lumby’s role, “Gary is an acknowledged growth expert and brings a wealth of business experience to his key role with Roche Legal, and we are all thrilled to be working with him.”
The strategic appointment of Gary Lumby as CEO aligns with Roche Legal’s ambitious expansion and innovation goals, particularly in international markets.
