The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has decided to extend Anna Bradley’s term as chair for an additional two years, foregoing the recruitment of her successor.
Anna Bradley, who first assumed the role of chair on 1 January 2019 and was reappointed for a second three-year term, will now serve until the end of 2026. The decision emerged from a closed board meeting, underscoring a strategic choice by the SRA to maintain leadership continuity during a period marked by significant organisational change.
The SRA, while detailing the reasons for this extension, highlighted recent developments and shifting risks within the legal sector. ‘Recent developments – including evidence of shifting risks in the legal sector – mean that this is not a steady state period for the SRA,’ the authority stated. This climate requires substantial focus on organisational development, which will be mirrored in adjustments to the SRA’s business plan for the upcoming year.
Moreover, this continuity aligns with the end of the SRA’s current three-year strategy, ensuring that there is a seamless pursuit of ongoing objectives without disruption. The board emphasised the necessity of maintaining stability and focus on essential developments, particularly in spheres like data management, risk assessment, proactive investigation work, and consumer protection review.
The SRA is concurrently under increased scrutiny, especially following the Legal Services Board’s examination of its handling of the Axiom Ince and SSB Law collapses, alongside evaluating the proposed hikes in compensation fund contributions. This intensified oversight adds a layer of complexity that potentially dissuades the appointment of a new chair at this juncture.
The criteria outlined for prospective candidates earlier included qualities such as political acumen and an ability to foster a culture of accountability and transparency. However, in light of the current situation, the board preferred to extend Ms Bradley’s term instead of bringing in new leadership who might face challenges adapting to the evolving pressures and public scrutiny.
Ms Bradley, who cannot be a practising lawyer, brings extensive regulatory experience, having formerly chaired the Council for Licensed Conveyancers from 2010 to 2015. Her tenure at the SRA now extends as the authority navigates through these challenging times with an eye on ensuring strategic continuity and stability.
The SRA’s decision to extend Anna Bradley’s chairmanship reflects a strategic response to the legal sector’s fluid landscape, prioritising experienced leadership to guide the organisation through evolving challenges.
