Oldham is poised for economic enhancement with the arrival of a new Lidl supermarket. Positioned strategically off the M60 near Oldham Road, the supermarket chain has received decisive approval to proceed with their expansive plans. This new development signifies Lidl’s commitment to strengthen its foothold in the UK market, promising a substantial boost in the locality’s retail landscape.
The approved site spans nearly 2,000 square metres, considerably larger than the initially proposed 500 square metres. This significant expansion reflects Lidl’s vision to cater more comprehensively to the consumers’ growing demands. The retail space itself will occupy over 1,300 square metres, highlighting a focus on a wide variety of products and services.
Among the key logistics, the development will be accessible via Olive Claydon Way, with provisions for 111 parking spaces, including 10 designated for parents and children, six for those with disabilities, and two equipped with electric charging ports. The operating hours have been carefully structured, offering convenience with service availability between 7:00 and 23:00 from Monday to Saturday, and from 10:00 to 18:00 on Sundays.
According to Josh Ambrus, property planner at Rapleys representing Lidl, this venture is aligned with providing ‘significant investment’ into the Oldham borough. The store’s creation is a vital component of Lidl’s wider UK expansion strategy, aiming to offer employment to up to 40 locals, with starting wages reflecting competitive entry-level positions.
Local Councillor Brian Holbin expressed optimism about this development in a recent planning meeting, underscoring the potential for economic revitalisation and employment. In his words, “It’s great that we’ve got somebody coming in and investing money in the area and hopefully jobs. I look forward to buying the croissants.” The new store is set to enhance competition among existing retailers like Morrisons, Asda, and BBM Supermarket, which are all within close proximity.
Lidl’s new supermarket promises to invigorate Oldham’s economy while offering notable shopping enhancements.
