A company known as DC01UK has revealed its intention to construct a massive data centre on an 83-acre site in Hertfordshire. This project is anticipated to become one of the UK’s most significant data centres, with a planned operational date of 2029.
DC01UK, established in 2022, has so far only presented dormant company accounts. Two affiliated entities, DC01AB and DC01 Holdings, emerged on 30 August 2024, marking significant corporate developments.
According to projections, the data centre will be crucial in stimulating economic activity. During construction, it will support at least 500 jobs, and upon completion, it will offer 200 permanent positions. Substantial indirect economic benefits, estimated at £1.1 billion annually, are expected alongside the creation of 13,700 jobs across various sectors.
The initiative is a joint venture between Griggs Group and Chiltern Green Energy Ltd. Although both are experienced in development, neither has a well-documented history in data centre projects. Despite this, they promise a ‘community-based technology and innovation hub’ as a key local benefit.
While some aspects of funding remain unclear, Griggs and Chiltern’s involvement signifies a strong commitment to realising this ambitious venture. Griggs’ expertise lies in bespoke development and planning, while Chiltern Green Energy focuses on prime locations for solar and battery storage solutions. However, direct experience with data centre projects appears limited.
The development also includes the transformation of a local disused pub into a community technology hub, aiming to integrate local innovation into the broader project.
Land acquisition costs remain an area of curiosity. A nearby one-acre site was leased for £132k, suggesting substantial expenditure for the 83-acre data centre site.
