Plans for a significant £3.75 billion data centre in Hertfordshire have been officially submitted by DC01UK to the Hertsmere Borough Council. This ambitious plan outlines the development of one of the largest data centres of its kind in Europe, potentially operational by 2029.
According to DC01UK, the construction phase of the project is projected to support 500 jobs, while 200 new permanent positions will be available once the centre is operational. This development aims to bolster the local economy and lay a foundation for future technological advancements.
Jeremy Newmark, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council and chair of the Hertfordshire Growth Board, expressed his excitement, stating, “This is incredibly exciting news. It shows that Hertsmere is an extremely desirable location for business and is a natural base for the cutting-edge technology and critical infrastructure which will serve Britain in the coming years and for many future generations.”
The project proposal is currently under the council’s planning process, which will include gathering feedback from the local community before a final decision is made. The timing of the announcement coincides with the UK government’s decision to award Critical National Infrastructure status to data centres, highlighting their growing importance.
A spokesperson for DC01UK reiterated the project’s significance, saying, “The ambition for this project is to build the next generation of national digital infrastructure to power the needs of tomorrow.” This development is expected to place Hertfordshire at the forefront of high-tech infrastructure projects in Europe.
DC01UK is a joint venture established in 2022 between property developer Griggs Group and Chiltern Green Energy, bringing together expertise in both property development and sustainable energy solutions.
The proposed data centre represents a pivotal step towards advancing the UK’s digital infrastructure, promising substantial local benefits.
