A pioneering facility dedicated to enhancing digital innovation has opened in Newcastle, known as the 5G Immersive Lab. Located in the city’s Eldon Square, this initiative aims to provide businesses with the tools and expertise to explore and implement new technologies. The lab offers access to cutting-edge technology, including a 5G network provided by Vodafone 5GSA, helping companies to develop and test new concepts.
During the launch, Science and Technology Minister Sir Chris Bryant expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting its capacity to revolutionise sectors including retail, agriculture, and manufacturing. He remarked, “It’s not easy to blow my socks off, but that’s what this did. It is fantastic to see first-hand digital innovation happening in the heart of Newcastle.”
The lab is designed to be a collaborative space where small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can partner with larger companies. This collaboration seeks to foster the development of proofs of concept and drive forward the commercialisation of digital products. The facility hosts technology workshops, demonstrations, and business challenges, encouraging a hands-on approach to technological advancement.
In conjunction with the Digital Catapult agency, the lab received £700,000 in funding from the North of Tyne Combined Authority. This funding is part of a larger £3.5 million Innovation Accelerator programme aimed at breaking down barriers to 5G and future connectivity. Jessica Driscoll, director of Immersive Technology at Digital Catapult, stated, “The 5G Immersive Lab will be a hub that will give businesses hands-on opportunities to experiment, collaborate, and accelerate the practical adoption of technologies to drive growth.“
