The UK government will host a pivotal follow-up to the AI Safety Summits in San Francisco this November.
- The event builds on previous summits in Bletchley Park and Seoul, focusing on AI safety.
- Experts will discuss practical measures for AI safety, shaping future regulations.
- The conference will align with the upcoming AI Action Summit in France early next year.
- Notable participation will include the UK’s AI Safety Institute and the Centre for the Governance of AI.
On 21 and 22 November, San Francisco will host a key event led by the UK government, bringing together AI developers and international stakeholders to discuss AI safety measures. This gathering follows prior summits in Bletchley Park in November 2023 and Seoul in May 2024, underscoring the UK’s commitment to global collaboration in AI governance.
The San Francisco event aims to solidify the commitments made at the Seoul Summit, where global leaders set out to determine risk thresholds for AI models deemed to pose a ‘severe risk’. By operationalising these commitments, the conference seeks to pave the way for effective AI safety implementation.
This summit will also serve as a preparatory stage for the AI Action Summit scheduled to take place in France in February 2025. It is intended to provide companies with a clear focus on enhancing their AI safety strategies, building on prior pledges made in Seoul, ensuring readiness for future discussions.
Peter Kyle, Tech Secretary, highlighted the significance of this summit, stating that it represents a ‘clear sign of the UK’s ambition’ to advance global AI safety. He emphasised how the discussions in San Francisco could guide companies in bolstering their AI safety frameworks before the forthcoming meetings in France.
Co-hosted by the UK’s AI Safety Institute and the Centre for the Governance of AI, the event is positioned to be a landmark occasion in the international AI discourse. Notably, the British AI Safety Institute has recently established a presence in San Francisco, signifying strategic international engagement.
In a related development, the US government announced the inaugural meeting of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, which will convene just days before the San Francisco summit, adding another layer of international cooperation to these efforts.
This strategic summit serves as a crucial step towards fostering international collaboration on AI safety.
